One of 7 (6th of 7) children of Adanas and Inara Hanokata of the Hanokata telecommunications conglomerate. Graduated from the State War Academy in YC 122. Developed a strong academic reputation while at the Academy, and became a capsuleer shortly before graduating, but also developed a personal reputation for libertine and "fast and loose" behavior during her enrollment - despite the fact that this did not interfere with her studies or her professional demeanor, it has been suggested that this aspect of Nairata's personality may have precluded her from consideration for official recruitment by the military, major corporations, or even her family conglomerate's many businesses due to concerns of potential entanglements. Having developed an appetite for combat during her enrollment at the State War Academy, became a privateer.

Originally intended to seek employment with House of Stormwalker Industries (the Caldari-allegiant branches of the House of Stormwalker have a strong relationship to the Hanokata family that transcends business) but instead eventually opted to seek membership in the Stormwalker-aligned Alliance of Privateers.

The Hanokata clan is, by Caldari reckoning, a relatively newly-prominent industrial family. Initially focused on telecommunications infrastructure, the Hanokata Communications Group eventually diversified into other industries such as electronics, starship components, and weapons manufacture (the last of these being very controversial at the time it was decided). Though not particularly averse to combat - the Hanokata family has yielded a number of high-ranking and/or highly-decorated military veterans - its members generally have chosen business/industrial pursuits; even those of its number who have retired from military service also often pursue business/industrial interests.
